Rockland County town is taking steps to combat the rash of hate crimes and mass shootings at houses of worships that have shocked the country.

The Clarkstown CARES Unit, short for Cultural and Religious Security Unit, formed in October 2018 after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting that killed 11 people.

The task force helps improve the security of 50 different houses of worships and cultural institutions around town, while also providing them with active shooter and stop-the-bleed training.

Since some recent hate crimes, like the Monsey Hanukkah stabbing, officials say demand for the unit has only increased.

The CARES units consists of seven police officers. It provides security to all types of cultural institutions and houses of of worship, including those of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths.
