CIAC halts remaining high school sports tournaments due to coronavirus concerns

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference has halted the remaining state tournaments due to concerns over the coronavirus.
Glenn Lungarini, the executive director of CAS-CIAC, called it a difficult decision. He says it was made to put the safety of student athletes, coaches, fans and parents first.
The remaining tournaments include boys and girls basketball, boys swimming and hockey.
The undefeated girls basketball team at Notre Dame Fairfield is ranked No. 1 team in the state. They were two wins away from winning the school's first-ever state title. The cancellation also affects Trinity Catholic in Stamford, which was playing its final games. It announced last week that it is closing its doors in June.
“Due to continuing concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19, the responses from local school districts and third-party venues have varied greatly. Some districts have informed us that they can no longer participate in our tournaments,” he said during a news conference.
Some coaches and parents told News 12 Connecticut they started a petition to reverse its decision. So far, it has more than 50,000 signatures. It is unclear what sort of impact the petition will have.
