A Trumbull woman is helping collect handmade medical masks for health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kim Petrafesa says she wanted to do something knowing there is a dire shortage of masks and medical equipment worn by health care professionals working around the clock during the pandemic.
She created a Facebook group called
CT face masks for COVID-19, asking creative friends and family to sew masks. She has received over 160 in just a few days.
Petrafesa also has a box in her driveway for people to drop off fabric and elastics needed to make the masks. She says she washes all the fabrics donated as well as the masks after they're made.
She personally delivers them to health care providers, who can then bring them to hospitals.
Although the Center for Disease Control recommends using N95 respirators and surgical masks to protect your face from the virus, they say due to the shortage in masks it is also acceptable to use handmade ones.
