Volunteers in Fairfield held a food drive Sunday to help replenish the Operation Hope food pantry.

Three good Samaritans accepted bags of groceries from other residents looking to help out a growing number of people out of work and in need of food.

Volunteers were extra careful to follow safety guidelines. They practiced social distancing and wore gloves and masks when they accepted food.

Operation Hope Executive Director Carla Miklos says individuals are stepping up to help those less fortunate. The organization provides over 123,000 meals every year to neighbors in need. 

"People are coming out, just shows the heart people have in this community and when times get tough they remember those who are probably most affected," Miklos says. "Because many people here aren't struggling and many people are struggling and they come together with a common purpose."

Volunteers say tents for the donation drive were given by Southport and Stratfield volunteer fire departments.
