Nursing homes across New Jersey are taking extra precautions to relocate patients after the state reported that 93 long-term care facilities have at least one case of the coronavirus.
State health officials say that nearly half of New Jersey’s 355 COVID-19-related deaths have been of patients over 80 years old. The situation has left many family members worried.
Brandon Cimmino likes to visit his 91-year-old grandmother Martha. But for now, he will only stay outside her facility and speak to her through the window so that he does not expose her.
“It’s crazy that it’s come to this. To have to see my grandmother through a window. Never thought I’d have to do that,” Cimmino says.

Cimmino’s grandmother is at the CareOne facility in East Brunswick. That particular facility is not reporting any COVID-19 cases. But CareOne says that 16 residents and six staff members at the New Milford location have tested positive.
“We are actively testing patients and awaiting results and screening at higher levels than CDC guidelines,” a spokesperson for CareOne says. “We have also confirmed five residents who passed tested positive. We are investigating other passings.”
“It gives you that peace of mind, saying, ‘Alright, I know she’s OK for now. I’ll check again tomorrow,’ But the worry is always there,” Cimmino says.
Last week, all patients from the St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Woodbridge were evacuated and moved to a CareOne facility in Whippany after 24 of 94 patients tested positive for the virus.
The CareOne spokesperson says, “We are battled-scarred, but not battle weary. In fact, with supplemental staff being deployed, we are stronger and even more prepared.
Cimmino says that for now his grandmother is OK and is worried more for her family than herself.
“Grandma stuff, you know? ‘How are you doing?’ She’s more worried about us than we are of her and I guess that’s how it always is, right?” he says.
Cimmino says that he has been told that CareOne will call his family if there are any positive cases of the virus at the facility.
