Workers at the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport are keeping a close eye on the animals after a tiger at the Bronx Zoo was infected with coronavirus.

Beardsley Zoo officials say that all employees are wearing masks, and they're social distancing from each other and the animals. They say this is critically important after a Malaysian tiger tested positive for COVID-19 at the Bronx Zoo.

The Bronx Zoo's chief veterinarian responded to those asking how an animal was tested as millions of people cannot receive it by saying, "The COVID-19 testing that was performed on our Malayan tiger Nadia was performed in a veterinary school laboratory and is not the same test as is used for people. You cannot send human samples to the veterinary laboratory, and you cannot send animal tests to the human laboratories, so there is no competition for testing between these very different situations."

Veterinarians say people should not be worried about their pets at home considering that over 1 million people are infected, but there have been almost no reported pet infections.

"Domestic cats, just like anything else, they may have a lot more ways to fight off a disease than an endangered species," Beardsley Zoo Director Gregg Dancho says.

The zoo director says the tiger case could actually help veterinarians understand coronavirus better and how it could affect your house pets.

There have been scattered reports of dogs testing positive for coronavirus in Asia, but the CDC says there is almost no chance of passing it between humans and house pets.
