Access Independence in Stratford has been churning out thousands of protective visors and respirator parts with 3D printers.
The urgently needed medical devices are being sent by the thousands at no charge to medical centers across the region, including to Yale New Haven Hospital, Waterbury Hospital and Mount Sinai Health System.
"We are committed to printing as many masks as we possibly can. We are shooting for at least 5,000. Possibly 10,000, as long as I still have materials coming in," said Charlie Conway.
Conway heads the nonprofit, which usually uses 3D printers to make prosthetics.
He says engineer Steve Wysocki helped the organization adapt to the grim realities of the fight against coronavirus.
The company hopes this volunteer effort will inspire a general spirit of unity.
