With the spring semester wrapped, Connecticut students are getting ready to jump into socially distanced summer internships.
Many of them will telecommute to their internships, getting looped into the workflow at brands like CVS Pharmacy and Aetna.
CVS Health's Bethany Gillen says the internship program is a valuable pipeline for talent that CVS Health didn't want to lose.
"Our goal is to be able to convert 65% of them to full time with us,” she says.
John Bau, the director of career development with Quinnipiac's engineering school, says employers do not want to give up on the cycle of recruiting.
He says the challenge for companies will be giving virtual interns a sense of working life without ever setting foot in the workplace.
"How do you instill a notion of corporate culture, of workplace values, the way people communicate - when it's all been disrupted?” he asked.
For students whose internships were canceled, Bau says they should still feel free to include them on a resume to send a message to future employers.
"I was working hard. I was doing what I was supposed to do. I was landing the opportunity and I'm a strong enough applicant that someone wanted to hire me," says Bau.
