A Connecticut Post reporter reflected on her arrest one year ago by Bridgeport police officers back when she was covering a demonstration for a teen who was fatally shot by police in the city.

Tara O'Neill says she was outraged when she saw the developments on TV Friday about CNN correspondent Omar Jimenez arrested and detained by Minnesota state patrol officers while covering a protest in Minneapolis that was sparked by the death of George Floyd.

Last spring, O'Neill was taken into custody, then later released, as Bridgeport police controlled a demonstration on the second anniversary of an officer-involved shooting that killed 15-year-old Jason Negron.

"Immediately it just took me back to last year, my heart was racing, my breathing sped up, I couldn't help but feel the helplessness that you can hear and you can see in the video of the CNN team being arrested. It's the same thing that happened to me last year," she says.

Community activist Wayne Winston says it does not matter that O'Neill is white, whereas Jimenez is Black. He says both cases point to a lack of restraint stoked by racial friction.

"We don't arrest journalists in this country. We just don't do it. They don't even get arrested in Iraq and Iran, all around the world. This is Minneapolis in the United States. It is a slap in the face to every American who carries a flag and considers himself a patriot or anything else," said Winston.

O'Neill says all media should stand together in condemning the arrest of the journalists at CNN.
