A retired construction worker celebrated his 100th birthday Saturday in Bridgeport.

Friends of Jose Martins say he worked hard to raise his family and serve his community - and that he has always been proud of that record.

"He's always been a great father, a great grandfather, a great uncle, a great husband. In my 45 years of life I've only seen my father get mad once. He always has a smile on his face," said his daughter Margarida Martins.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal said he was excited to share in the joy of the occasion.
