McDonald's and Taco Bell employees walked off the job Thursday at the service plaza along I-95 North in Darien to protest what they say is systemic mistreatment.

The employees walked out of work and took to the parking lot of the plaza with signs that read "No More SysteMac Oppression" playing off of McDonald's flagship sandwich, the Big Mac, and also "Essential Workers NOT Expendable Workers."

Employees were also chanting "workers united will never be defeated."

They claim the building wasn't properly sanitized after workers contracted the coronavirus, and that they haven't been given enough personal protective equipment.

They also claim McDonald's is hiring new employees, but has not brought back seven long-time workers that they've laid off amid the pandemic.

Workers say they're underpaid and are not receiving benefits like paid sick time.

Thursday's walkout was not the first time 32BJ, the northeastern chapter of the Service Employees International Union, has brought up work-related concerns.

They made their voices heard recently in April during another demonstration.

Project Services, which runs 23 service places in the state, says they've been following the governor's 'Safe Store' rules.

The McDonald's owners say they disinfected after learning their workers tested positive for coronavirus, and also informed workers who may have been in close contact with them.

Service plaza workers say they are being cheated out of millions in pay
