The Institute for American Indian Studies in Washington, Connecticut is located in beautiful rolling hills through farmlands, and it's exhibits follow the 10,000-year long story of Connecticut's Native American peoples.
The museum and research center, formerly known as the American Indian Archaeological Institute, opened on July 1, 1975.
However, in 1991 the name changed to the Institute for American Indian Studies, and the focus shifted to include education in conjunction with research.
Today, in addition to special events and workshops, IAIS also houses a knowledgeable education department, dedicated to developing and providing in-depth and exciting programs for students of all ages.
The museum features a replica Algonkian village, themed walking trails, and a healing plants garden.
