Sen. Richard Blumenthal is calling for more federal funding to ease the problem of homelessness across Connecticut.
Blumenthal met this weekend with a Bridgeport woman who says she's about to become homeless due to a housing shortage in the city. Hammill, who suffers from heart disease, says she worked all of her life before becoming disabled five years ago.
Now she says she's sleeping on an air mattress in her sister's apartment and is worried she'll end up living on the street.
"Come August, where am I going to go, what am I going to do?  You know, I don't know where I'm going to go, what I'm going to do. I don't want to be in the streets, you know, I don't want to be sleeping on a park bench," she says.
"Kathleen Hammill is just one of many, many people who are homeless now because of the COVID 19 and the economic crisis. More money is coming to Connecticut from the CARES Act, but much more is necessary," Blumenthal said.
The Democratic senator praised local nonprofits like the Needs Clearing House for helping homeless people who fall through the cracks.
