Officials are warning parents to remain aware of their children's social media habits after a 14-year-old Bridgeport boy was killed in an apparent luring incident, police say.
Police say Jose Nunez was strangled on Tuesday and are investigating his death as a possible sex crime. The teen's body was later found in a remote section of Oxford.
The suspect in Nunez's death, Diante Willoughby, 20, was arrested and arraigned in court Thursday. Nunez's parents say Willougby had contacted their son on Snapchat in the past.
Police say more than one person may have been involved in the death of Nunez in Bridgeport, and they encourage anybody with information about the crime to call them.
Many families are wondering how to monitor online activity when access to social media is everywhere. Experts say it's more about supervising your kids and starting that process by using safety measures that are already built in to family phone plans.
They say the safeguards allow parents to maximize protection through access to much of what their kids are doing online.
When it comes to apps like Snapchat, which Nunez's dad says he could not monitor because messages in the app disappear instantly, experts say it's important to get ahead of the problem by establishing a good line of communication with your kid.
Police say parents can get an app called Life360, which gives parents access to where they're kids are and often what they are doing.
Officials say warning kids about the dangers of being manipulated by another social media user, and even somebody they may think they can trust, is key.
