Parents shopping for back-to-school clothes and shoes will be enjoying a week of tax-free purchases in Connecticut beginning on Sunday.

Nine states around the country held their back-to-school tax holidays this past weekend, and reports from business owners on the sales impact have been mixed.

With uncertainty still swirling about what school will look like this fall, some are unsure how much the back-to-school shopping rush will be affected.

Hawley Lane Shoes in Shelton says its busy season always falls in August, and this year is no different. Salespeople say some things never change – even during a pandemic.

"The one thing we can count on, kids grow,” says Robert Mannino, of Hawley Lane. “Most kids are coming in for shoes whether they need them for back-to-school or not.”

Including Connecticut, 16 states offer a tax-free week or weekend before school starts.
