Schools in Danbury will move to remote learning following the recent spike in coronavirus cases.
Superintendent Sal Pascarella says in order to safeguard the health and safety of students and staff, school will now start Sept. 8, with distance learning for all students until at least Oct. 1.
Mayor Mark Boughton says by mid-October, they will evaluate the situation and hopefully be able to move to hybrid learning and then hopefully another couple months after that move to a "more traditional school year."
The Connecticut Department of Public Health issued a COVID-19 alert for Danbury on Friday after the city saw at least 178 new COVID-19 cases in a two-week period.
The spike in cases is up from 40 cases the previous two-week period.
Boughton says from contract tracing it appears the virus was community spread from national and international travel, athletic league events, and church services.
He says athletic leagues have been canceled too and that churches will now limit services or hold virtual services.
Overall, the state has a positivity rate of less than 1%.
The city is urging residents to stay home if possible, avoid unnecessary outings and outdoor gatherings, and limit indoor gatherings to only those they live with.
Danbury officials say there will be a free COVID-19 testing site today at Rogers Park.
