Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton says that the city is getting a fast-moving coronavirus flare-up under control, but that access to Candlewood Lake would be restricted.
"We know people have got 'COVID Fatigue.' We get it, but at the end of the day, we've got to make sure that our folks are healthy," Boughton says.
Health officials believe Danbury is seeing a spike in COVID-19 cases due to residents traveling internationally and spreading the virus to relatives, who then spread it through sporting events and religious services.
To prevent further spread at party barges on Candlewood Lake, Gov. Ned Lamont announced that the state is closing the Lattins Cove state boat launch Wednesday, just after the city closed its own boat ramp.
As fishermen reeled their boats in, they say closing this spot down misses the mark. Boaters also say it's not the state ramps you need to worry about, but the private marinas where a lot of party boats launch from, which have been unaffected.
"There's little islands that you can go on, these little nooks," says Mike DeBonis, of Watertown. "You get about 50 boats. You all tie up together and you party."

District officials already announced that school would start remotely for everyone until at least Oct. 1.
"I think it's a good idea on Danbury's part, just to keep numbers low, the children safe," says Rose Garcia, of Danbury.
For the rest of the state, Lamont is pushing for in-person classes.
"Look, I think, especially for those younger grades, they cohort, they stay within a group under themselves," he says. "The teacher is back a good 8, 10 feet. I think that's safer than them jumping around between day care and a lot of other facilities."
School athletics programs have also been canceled.
New COVID-19 cases in Danbury dropped from 44 on Friday to 25 on Tuesday. Health care officials are investigating a small COVID-19 outbreak at a rehab center.
The facility has not been identified.
