A livery driver was robbed inside his own cab at knifepoint in an incident that was caught on surveillance video.
Video shows the suspect checking around to see if anyone is looking before he opens the side door of an unlocked cab with a sleeping driver inside. Driver Gary Herman told his side of the incident that happened outside the Pelham Bay train station Monday to News 12.
Herman, 70, says the man had him by the neck as he tried to wrestle a weapon away. He says he grabbed the blade with his bare hands, and that's when his attacker's partner swung open the car door, lunged at him and snatched money out of his front pocket.
A bus blocks a camera's view of the two men running away. Herman says the two had a helper.
Herman says he ended up with 11 stitches to his right hand. In his 50 years driving a livery cab, he says nothing like this has ever happened to him.
"This team will strike again ... Pelham Bay or Middletown Road, or Throgs Neck or Co-op City ... these guys are going to strike again," says Herman.
