WOODBRIDGE - Woodbridge officials have voted down a retroactive permit to legalize a fire pit and patio built by the town's volunteer fire department.

Officials claim the department did not have permission to build the structures on land situated between the firehouse and local wetlands.

Dominick Thomas, the department's lawyer, says similar violations are common, but the issue is garnering far too much scrutiny.

Some residents say a firehouse is no place for entertainment, while others say it is healthy for firefighters to have an outdoor escape.

Thomas says he plans to appeal the decision within the next two weeks.
