Two firefighters were seriously injured but are expected to be OK after battling a blaze inside the Forest Houses, a NYCHA complex.
Three other people were injured, one of them seriously. One of them is a minor.
The FDNY says the fire was reported on the sixth floor.
It took about an hour to get the fire under control, but FDNY remained on scene throughout the morning.
News 12 visited several apartments on the fifth and fourth floor that had extensive water damage. News 12's cameras captured brown water covering the floor of several apartments. The crew also saw water dripping from pipes.
NYCHA staff were seen sweeping the water from the apartments into the slippery stairwell. The elevators in the building are also out of service. There is an 'unplanned elevator outage' sign on each elevator door.
While residents work to dry up their apartments with vacuums, mops and fans, they also wonder what could have led to the fire on the sixth floor.
News 12 was told the apartment where the fire started smells extremely bad. Every resident News 12 spoke with says the apartment causes the whole sixth floor to smell, and that it's a health hazard.
Residents said it smelled "like a dead person" and "like funk."
"Many tenants on that floor had complained to housing about the condition and the smell that was coming out of that apartment."
Those were some of the responses from residents on the smell. People told News 12 they believe hoarders live in the unit and that it's a complete mess.
FDNY personnel on scene told News 12 they did notice a smell on the sixth floor and that the apartment was messy. It said it was an active investigation, and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
