Unified sports teams compete in cornhole tournament
Unified Sports is the fastest growing sport within Special Olympics, and the tournament was named for longtime former president and CEO of Unified Sports, Beau Doherty.
The wind was whipping down at the first-ever Beau Doherty Cornhole Invitational, but that didn't stop nearly 200 student athletes from competing. Unified sports teams from Trumbull, Bridgeport and other parts of the state all battled for a WWE-style championship belt at Harding High School Tuesday afternoon.
Unified Sports is the fastest growing sport within Special Olympics, and the tournament was named for longtime former president and CEO of Unified Sports, Beau Doherty.
Doherty himself said he hopes the event helps bring unified sports to more cities in Connecticut.
"It's very important because people with or without disabilities are on the same team. There's some great awareness and education that happens, and phenomenal relationships and that's what we really started Unified Sports to do," Doherty said.
WWE superstar Nikki Cross was in attendance to help award the winning team.
