First responders came together Saturday to support one of their own batting cancer.

The Battle of the Badges basketball game was held for Bridgeport Firefighter Jonathan Pabon at Hall Neighborhood House.

Pabon, 34, is currently battling lung cancer. As part of the fundraiser, the Bridgeport Fire Department played against Bridgeport police. The Fairfield Fire/Police departments also went head-to-head.

Pabon says it was humbling to see people come out to support him.

“Me and my family, we appreciate everything that everyone’s done,” he said.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal says it is not uncommon for young firefighters to receive cancer diagnoses due to the chemicals they are exposed to on the job.

“That is why I am so dedicated to achieving legislation providing better protection,” he said.

All proceeds raised during the event will benefit Pabon and his family. A GoFundMe has also been set up.
