Five students and one Uber driver were hospitalized with critical injuries after a two-car crash outside Sacred Heart University, police say.

The crash happened Friday just after midnight near the Sacred Heart University Martire Building at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Park Avenue. Police say a white Toyota and black Audi were traveling in opposite directions on Jefferson Street when the Audi collided with the Toyota.

Police say the Uber driver and four female students were in the Toyota and were heading back to campus. A male student was in the Audi. It's unclear his destination. The students are from out-of-state and around 18 years old, according to police.

Police say two students are in critical condition, another student and the Uber driver are in critical but stable condition. The two remaining students are in stable condition.

Sacred Heart University public safety officers responded to the crash, along with the Fairfield and Bridgeport police and fire departments and EMS crews. Video shows one car completely mangled and another car flipped over.

Sacred Heart University released a statement saying, "We are aware of an accident that occurred on Jefferson Avenue in Fairfield early this morning involving five Sacred Heart University students. They are being treated at local hospitals. The safety of our students, faculty and staff are always our top priority. We are in communication with local authorities and have no further information at this time."

At 11 a.m., classes were canceled so a prayer service could be held. A police social worker is at the hospital and available to the victims' families.

The crash remains under investigation.
