A Mexican American artist is using every stroke of his brush to chronicle his journey from Mexico to America in a solo exhibit in Bridgeport.

Miguel Angel Mendoza, 56, was born in Oaxaca, Mexico. His work is on display at the City Lights Gallery for Hispanic Heritage Month. His oil portraits stand out for their striking and vivid realism.

"I love America because I've been here since I was 19 years old and this country gave me everything," says Mendoza.

He says his wife and four sons are the center of his universe telling News 12 he achieves that realism thanks to a set of artistic skills he's developed over a lifetime.

"Makes me feel really proud and happy because I started when I was like 7 years old, 8 years old, drawing," says Mendoza.

Mendoza, who is a full-time chef, says the love he has for the people in his life will never fade.

He says he enjoys creating artwork that represents family and freedom.

The exhibit runs through Nov. 1.
