Lieberman's political friends – and former rivals – were also in attendance, a testament to a complicated politician who constantly broke party barriers.
Nearly a quarter century ago, Al Gore and Joe Lieberman came within a few hundred votes of winning The White House. Gore traveled to Stamford to say goodbye to his running mate, who died from injuries suffered in a fall on Wednesday.

Honoring Jewish tradition, the body of Sen. Lieberman was carried reverently by pall bearers in a plain pine box, which senior Rabbi Daniel Cohen, at Congregation Agudath Sholom, says symbolizes the importance of the putting the spiritual over the material in one's journey through life.
"And in our synagogue where he grew up, he was one of us and I think that's what endeared him to so many people," said Cohen.
Gov. Ned Lamont ordered flags to be at half-staff across the state.
