An initiative launched by the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association is working to improve communication between law enforcement and drivers during traffic stops.

The goal of breaking barriers is to provide information on what to expect during a stop, particular for new drivers.

Officers say most driver's education classes do not discuss the topic.

They say traffic stops can lead to heighten anxiety and misunderstandings between drivers and police.

As of the part of initiative, several videos featuring officers have been created, demonstrating what to expect and how to respond.

Breaking barriers recently received a grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

"Often times, being pulled over for something you are doing behind the wheel is going to save your life and you will stop repeating your behavior the next time you get behind the wheel. So these videos really are imprinting invaluable lessons that hopefully students and people later in life who have an opportunity to view them think before they get behind the wheel," says Garrett Eucalitto, DOT commissioner.

The Department of Motor Vehicles, which supports breaking barriers, will work with driving schools to share the videos so they can be used as resources in classes.
