Officials: Underground explosion caused closures in downtown Stamford

An underground explosion in downtown Stamford on Thursday morning continued to impact the evening commute.
Officials told News12 that two manholes in the middle of Washington Boulevard and Main Street exploded around 10 a.m., injuring an Eversource worker.
They said the worker has already been discharged from the hospital and is doing well.
There are multiple road closures in the area. Residents are urged to stay away while repairs are being made.
“So, it's going to cause more traffic on Broad Street, Summer, and Atlantic Street, as well as west of us, going towards the west side, but I would avoid Washington Boulevard," said Stamford Police Lt. James Comstock.
Police told News12 that workers from Eversource were down below the road checking out a report of a gas leak when they think one of them accidentally hit an electrical wire and set off a fire.
Eversource said there’s no reported power outage in the area because of it.
“There'll be officers hired for the evening to assist with pedestrian traffic,” said Comstock.
Officials said there's no risk to public safety.
Stamford police said Eversource is working to replace both the lines and the manhole covers.
They also said they will try to get everything back open for rush hour Friday morning or by Friday night.
