Norwalk police are reminding people that it's illegal to park in a handicap parking space following an uptick in the city.

State law prohibits people from parking in a spot meant for a blind person or someone with disabilities unless a driver either has a special license plate or windshield placard.

Police add that the spaces are designed to accommodate people who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices to get in and out of their car or van.

A first-time offense will cost a driver $250 and repeated offenses carry a fine of $500.

Police say it's important for people to be cognizant of handicap signage and markings when parking.
