Broadway star Kara Young is no stranger to making history and she's done it again.

The Harlem-born actress recently earned her fourth Tony Award nomination, becoming the first Black performer to achieve that milestone.

"It feels like every single year, I never expect any of these things to happen,” Young said in a sit-down interview with News 12.

The recognition, she says, isn’t just about her.

"I have to say the recognition is not just about me. It's also the recognition of this entire company, all the staff, art stagehands, stage management, art design,” she said.

Young is currently starring as Aziza in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Purpose," a darkly comedic and moving story that touches on themes of mental health, family and life choices.

"I challenge the notion that it is so particular to Black people,” said Young, “I think it's about a legacy family."

Outside of Broadway, Young is expanding her reach to the big screen - joining the cast of upcoming film "Is God Is" alongside Mallori Johnson, Sterling K. Brown and Janelle Monáe.

On Monday, it was announced that Young will star in a revival of Whoopi Goldberg's "The Whoopi Monologues," alongside four other actors.
