Fairfield officials are facing a deadline to decide who will become the town's next first selectman following the death of Bill Gerber.

Acting First Selectman Christine Vitale, a Democrat, and Republican Brenda Kupchick have until August 15 to agree on a replacement, who must be a Democrat.

Kupchick said Wednesday she disagrees with the process and did not agree on a choice at a meeting yesterday.

If no agreement is reached by the deadline, a group of Democrats will move forward with filling the seat.
