Tempers flared in Bridgeport Monday night as immigrant rights activists called on the City Council to provide more protection for residents against ICE.

Dozens of activists packed the City Council chambers. Sonia Hernandez, of Make The Road Connecticut, says after recent videos of ICE officers making arrests in Norwalk and Stamford went viral, she doesn’t feel safe in her own city.“ Just think if it was one of your family members,” Hernandez says. “What would you do if they kidnapped your wife or even you? We want to prevent what’s happening in other cities.”

The resolution, which called for increased protection for immigrants and more transparency on how federal immigration enforcement operates in Bridgeport, passed on Monday night.

City Council member Jorge Cruz claims he felt the city wanted to delay the vote because of the impact it could have on federal funding. “The Ganim administration is afraid of Donald Trump,” Cruz says. “We all need grants, but we’re talking about humans."

We’re talking about saving and protecting people who live here, people who have children, people’s children that go to school here.” Only one council member voted no against the resolution.
