Connecticut's homeless population seeks shelter to escape the bitter cold

With temperatures Wednesday morning that feel like below zero, Inspirica in Stamford is providing services for women and children and say it is at full capacity.
The population of people living outside, in their cars, tents or in other places not meant for human habitation rose by 45% from 2024 to 2025.

State lawmakers have said they want to focus on addressing homelessness in the legislative session that begins next month.
"It's definitely gotten worse and it's certainly perpetuated by the fact that affordable housing is very sparce, wages aren't keeping up. All of those things contribute to the state of homelessness today," said Inspirica CEO Rosalba Messina.
The governor just extended the severe weather protocol to Feb. 5, one of the longest stretches.

Inspirica also works with Pacific House in Stamford that provides services for men.
