Residents are urged to “be patient” because the state had “over 600 plows all over the state” working to clear the roads, Gov. Ned Lamont said.
Crews were dealing with heavier snow that “takes us longer to get that plowed,” and said plow operators often had to “go right back and do it all over again,” he said during an interview with News 12 Monday.
He asked drivers to stay off the roads because traffic slows the clearing process.
He also said the state was working closely with Eversource and UI to track outages and clear routes so crews could reach affected areas. Lamont warned residents to stay away from downed wires because “they may be energized.”
He discussed the travel ban in place for commercial vehicles on limited-access highways. He said he did not expect to lift it soon, adding that conditions did not yet justify changes, and said he is coordinating with neighboring states to determine the best time to reopen roads.
He also noted that emergency protocols were active due to the extreme cold, including warming centers and shelters for residents without heat. He told viewers to dial 211 to find the nearest shelter and said extra staff were available to answer calls. He said the state was working to ensure homeless residents had a safe place to stay.
