Two elementary schools will close as part of a new plan by the Milford School Board: Calf Pen Elementary and Meadowside Elementary. The school board voted Monday night on a new 20-year plan that has been years in the making.
“I think the Board of Ed made the right next step in this long-range process,” said Milford Superintendent Dr. Anna Cutaia.
Cutaia says the school board voted 7-2 Monday night to close the schools but renovate the city’s remaining schools over the next 17 years, costing more than $1 billion.
“I believe moving forward, it’s the right investment in 21st-century learning spaces to appropriately accommodate our students with special needs, expand our programming for all kids and be responsive to what’s relevant in the area of continued learning for kids,” said Cutaia.
The board heard from people on both sides of the plan. The school system says it has done focus groups and held many community conversations. It says it has been a three-year journey focusing on what’s best for students.
“We just have to take the first step,” said Cutaia.
The board had already decided to close Harborside Middle School. The city will need to weigh in on bonding and detail how this will be funded.
