A 31-year-old New York man is facing multiple charges for a domestic assault incident that occurred at a Bridgeport apartment Tuesday, police say.
Police say Bryan James Hernaiz was taken into custody at his job in Fairfield Wednesday. They say his most recent address was in New Rochelle, New York but has also lived in Bridgeport.
Police responded to an apartment on Sanford Place, where a woman told them she had been punched by Hernaiz. Officers say they believed Hernaiz might be barricaded inside the woman's apartment with an assault rifle.
Police created a perimeter while a negotiator and members of the Emergency Services Unit were activated. When Emergency Service Officers entered the apartment, Hernaiz was not there. But they did find an AR-15 style rifle in the closet, along with two 30-round magazines and 92 rounds of .223 caliber ammunition.
The woman was treated for a minor head injury.
Officers served Hernaiz with two felony warrants. The first was for a domestic violence case from 2025 and the second one was for Tuesday's incident.
Herniaz's charges include assault, violation of a protection order, criminal possession of a firearm, and risk of injury of a child.
Herniaz is being held on a $220,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
