Norwalk Public Schools honored the legacy of a longtime educator Firday.

A ceremony was held to rename the South Norwalk Neighborhood School to the Dr. Ruby Shaw Elementary School.

Shaw worked as a school social worker, created the district's first magnet school and served on the Board of Education.

Shaw's daughter says she and her family are grateful for the recognition.

"Her spirit is present as we remember her life's work with and for the public school system of this city. Even more than that, she gave herself to the development in education of children, so they could become the kind of adults our world truly needs," says Shelley Shaw.

Shaw was also a professor at Norwalk Community College and involved in many community organizations.

She died in 2019 at 94.
