Voter turnout low despite limited-edition Knicks stickers

Only 10% of early voters so far are from the Bronx.

New York is less than a week away from Primary Election Day, which means early voting is underway for Bronx residents to cast their ballots in several races, including City Council, state Senate, and Congress.

The city's Board of Elections (BOE) got creative with its latest effort to promote the primary election, with Knicks-themed "I voted" stickers at polling sites on Thursday.

At one polling site in Soundview, News 12 captured few people casting their ballots, so it's unclear if the stickers were driving people to the polls and raises questions over whether it is getting less attention without a mayoral race.

"Usually I get the booklets with the candidates that are in it," early voter Patricia Johnson said. “Nothing this year, nothing for this election. I don't think people know."

As of the fifth day of early voting, 7,262 votes have been cast in the Bronx.

In the last non-mayoral election in 2024, 3,743 votes had been cast over the same period of time. Last year's mayoral race saw 13,443 votes from the Bronx through the fifth day.

Those who have cast their ballot already say it's essential.

"This is what determines how we function in this city," early voter Adele said.
