A dead whale washed up near Ditch Plains in Montauk.

A spokesman for the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society says they were notified Thursday morning of a deceased humpback whale floating approximately seven miles south of Ditch Plains Beach.

A whale believed to be the same one, was found washed ashore in Ditch Plains this morning; it is estimated to be around 40 feet in length, according to AMSEAS.

The whale is believed to be a female humpback and has been severely scavenged, according to the AMSEAS who is working with the Town of East Hampton, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and NOAA Fisheries, on a plan to remove the animal.

A second whale carcass is also being monitored by NOAA Fisheries, reported floating offshore near Block island.

Since 2016, NOAA Fisheries has been investigating an unusual mortality event for humpback whales in the North Atlantic.
