For 52-year-old Bridgeport resident Joseph Achola, the reality of hunger is deeply personal. Growing up in East Africa, going hungry was simply a part of daily life.
It was that exact lived experience that drove Achola to join hundreds of other volunteers at the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club in Bridgeport Saturday, where a massive community effort came together to combat local food insecurity.
Four regional Rotary Clubs, representing Fairfield, Monroe, Trumbull, and Bridgeport, joined forces to pack 100,000 nutritious meals. The food is destined for area food pantries, which have been heavily strained by recent federal budget cuts.
Event organizer Doug Wade expressed deep gratitude for the chance to give back.
"It's an amazing feeling, that's all I can say," Wade said.
