A Connecticut program is working to help young female basketball players turn their dreams into reality.
Hoop Smarts IQ says it was created to give girls more opportunities to develop their skills and gain exposure as they pursue college and professional basketball careers.
The organization's founder says there are many local opportunities for boys to showcase their talent, but fewer options available for girls.
To help address that gap, Hoop Smarts IQ hosted a series of exhibition games this weekend in Bridgeport.
The event featured young female athletes from across the tri-state area and gave them a chance to display their skills in front of the community.
"There's a lot of beautiful basketball, amazing basketball, being played at the lower levels, and that's what Hoop Smarts IQ hopes to showcase," organizers said.
Supporters say programs like this are becoming increasingly important as interest in women's sports continues to grow.
"Supporting women in sports, and especially women in hoops, has never been more important, especially for these young people," one supporter said.
Organizers say the goal is to provide mentorship, training and exposure for girls looking to continue their basketball careers at higher levels.
