So close, yet so far.

Darien Little League's historic summer came to an end Friday night in Bristol.

The team lost 8-6 to Bayonne, New Jersey, in the Metro Region Championship game.

A win would've catapulted Darien to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The fans shared words of encouragement to the team after the heartbreaking loss.

"You gave it your all and you did good," Maryanne Paccione says. "You should be proud of yourselves for how far you came."

A protest was filed against the New Jersey team recently for the use of at least one ineligible player.

Little League officials told News 12 that an investigation into the matter didn’t uncover any wrongdoing.
