Labor Day is approaching, and travel experts say now is the time to book flights before prices climb even higher.

Airfares are up more than 25% compared with last year, according to the latest government inflation data.

Experts point to higher fuel costs and strong travel demand as the main reasons for the increase.

"People still want to travel even as prices go higher. Demand is not decreasing," said Julian Kheel, founder and CEO of Points Path.

"That means airlines can keep those prices high, especially at key holiday times," Kheel said.

Experts say the same trend could continue as Thanksgiving and Christmas travel draws closer.

Travelers are encouraged to book flights now and continue watching fares afterward.

Experts say most airline tickets can still be changed if a lower fare becomes available later.
