Norwalk police have launched a new online portal designed to give residents more information about the city's license plate reader camera system.
The new Flock Transparency Portal was created to address community concerns and explain how the cameras are used.
According to the portal, Norwalk currently has 11 license plate reader cameras.
Police said data collected by the cameras is retained for 21 days.
The portal also details the types of investigations the cameras can assist with, including stolen vehicles, stolen license plates, suspected gang activity and warrants.
Officials said the cameras collect information about vehicles, not people.
Police said the technology cannot identify faces, race, gender or traffic violations.
The portal also states that data is not automatically shared with a national database.
Each agency controls access to its own data and can choose whether to share information with other law enforcement agencies for lawful investigative purposes.
Norwalk police said the cameras cannot be used for civil immigration enforcement.
The department also said the technology cannot be used to investigate people seeking or providing reproductive or gender-affirming health care or for surveillance based on protected characteristics such as race, religion, sex or gender identity.
