Dog dies in Orange house fire as crews battle strong winds

A family's dog died after a house fire broke out in Orange late Friday night as firefighters battled challenging conditions from high winds, officials said.
It happened at 828 Mapledale Rd. around 11 p.m.
Firefighters saw flames coming from the back of the home when they arrived to the scene. Inside, firefighters found heavy fire in the attic space and vaulted ceilings.
Crews entered the attic area and put out the fire.
Fire Chief Vaughan Dumas said crews not only had to deal with the fire, but the weather.
“With the storm bearing down on us, there was no moon or other light, and, unfortunately, the high winds had an impact on the intensity of the fire," he said.
Firefighters also searched for the family dog. Officials say the dog was injured in the fire and later died.
Dumas said the homeowner escaped safely.
The Orange Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
