A Southern Connecticut State University student has been released after spending two weeks in ICE detention, prompting calls for an investigation from U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal.
Blumenthal said student Deng Deng was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement despite having valid protections under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program.
"I think ICE needs to be reined in from this kind of unnecessary, in fact, illegal detention of people who have a legal basis to be here," Blumenthal said.
Blumenthal said he is seeking a formal investigation into the regional ICE field office to determine why Deng was detained and to help ensure the rights of other DACA recipients are not violated.
