E-bikes are popular for many reasons, primarily for making cycling much easier and faster. But as the bikes surge in popularity, doctors at St. Vincent's Medical Center say injuries and fatalities are also rising.
"We are seeing more e-bike injuries than we are motorcycle crashes at this point," said Dr. Shea Gregg, chair of the Department of Surgery at St. Vincent's Medical Center.
Bridgeport officials announced a partnership with Hartford Healthcare on Tuesday to launch a community e-bike safety and helmet distribution program.
Dr. Gregg said a majority of the riders who are involved in e-bike incidents and are treated at the hospital were not wearing a helmet.
"I bike quite a bit, and I know the potential hazards, especially around vehicular traffic or high speeds. This brings a bit of relief to know that we will save lives," said Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim.
There will be an e-bike helmet distribution event at St. Vincent's Medical Center on Oct. 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. An estimated 150 helmets will be available. The helmets will also be sized correctly for each rider present.
