It's bow hunting season and while many enjoy hunting, some Huntington residents are raising concerns about safety after a deer died on private property.

Kat Hankinson, of Huntington, says a hunter was hunting on her neighbor's property on Oct. 1, when they shot a deer. Hankinson told News 12 she learned her neighbor gave that hunter permission but she didn't give the hunter permission to remove the deer on her property.

Hankinson says the deer died on her property and she then called the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Now, she's raising concerns about whether the distance requirements for hunters were followed.

The state DEC says hunters can use a bow as long as they are at least 150 feet away from any occupied dwelling, farm building or structure.

Hankinson says it's a tightly packed neighborhood with lots of horses.

"If a deer gets shot here and runs back through here, the way it happened last week, a horse gets startled," says Hankinson. "They're innocent and they're beautiful. This little deer, my neighbor actually saw it when it was a newborn."

The state DEC confirmed they received a report about this from the landowner and a hunter. They say a hunter is not allowed to enter private property without permission.
