Nassau County police say a construction worker died after being pulled from an underground work area where he was submerged in water following a water main break in Uniondale.
Police are now identifying the man as 56-year-old Rafael Peralta, of West Babylon.
Police say they responded to the area of Ring Road at around 11:15 a.m. Friday.
Detectives say the worker had been working underground, when water from a broken main submerged the area. His coworkers pulled him out, and saving measures were performed.
The worker was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“Losing a loved one is really hard. Knowing that they went out there to provide for their families,” said Alice Lindow, of Queens, after hearing about the incident. “And I just want to pray for God's comfort and strength for the family that is grieving a lost one, because it's never easy.”
Ring Road between Stewart Avenue and Zeckendorf Boulevard were shut down but has since reopened.
The Town of Hempstead Water Department assisted in turning off the main water line.
There is no word on what caused the water main break.
