Warm weather wins out for now, but a powerful 'Bomb Cyclone' brings the cold and possible snow to parts of the northeast

Not record-breaking warmth but it does feel like early June tomorrow. Passing showers Wednesday afternoon brings back near normal temperatures for Thursday. The weekend feels more like winter thanks to a deepening storm in the Canadian maritime.

FORECAST:

The weather will be wonderfully warm through tomorrow. Favorable winds and sunshine will allow the mercury in the thermometers to jump well past the seasonal norms of the upper 60s. Afternoon highs should be well established in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees on Wednesday.

There have been some pretty eye-catching social media headlines popping up without much context regarding our New Jersey local weather. Let me explain...

Yes, there is going to be a strengthening storm up near Nova Scotia this weekend. By definition, when a storm's central pressure drops 24mb (millibars) in 24 hours, the meteorological word to define such an event is "Bombogenesis." That apparently wasn't good for news headline writers, so "Bomb Cyclone" appeared. Catchy. Sexier.

I digress. Here is what it means for us in New Jersey.

Meteorologically speaking, this type of deepening weather system usually brings a wide variety of weather conditions depending on the time of year. The one weather feature that is constant is the wind. And this weekend will be very windy. That wind will transport unusually chilly air from upstate New York and Canada and drag it towards New Jersey.

That is the headline in the center of the weather marquee. This weekend will be cold in New Jersey.

What about all that snow talk? Parts of the Northeast - the Catskills, the Adirondacks and the Green and White Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire will see a minor accumulation. No big deal and quite normal for them, especially with elevation. There is the smallest of chances. I mean the absolute lowest opportunity that some of these cold wind gusts could grab a flake or two and swish it towards the northwest corner of the state on Saturday morning. Do I think it will happen? NO.

For those of you not ready for the sudden change in how it is going to feel around here, let's just then focus on what's in front of us. Tomorrow, temperature-wise, is looking lovely. Upper 70s to low 80s. There is a chance for some stormy weather to rear up, so be prepared for some showers anytime after 3 p.m.
