Fairfield police are warning residents of a scam where people call and impersonate officers.

Police have received reports from residents getting calls from scammers who claim to be officers and inform them that they have failed to appear in court and now have an active warrant for their arrest.

They say although no one has been impacted beyond the initial calls, they say scams such as these often involve scammers demanding money to avoid being arrested or having their warrant dismissed.

Police have released the following reminders:

  • The department will never demand money over the phone to avoid an arrest or a warrant.

  • Scammers may use the names of actual police officers to appear legitimate

  • Caller ID can be manipulated to make calls appear to originate from the department

  • Never provide personal or financial information or send money to an unverified caller.

  • Scammers often create a sense of fear and urgency to pressure victims to act before they have time to question the situation.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up and contact police at 203-254-4800.
